The French education system greatly developed between 1960 and 1990. Nursery schooling greatly progressed. Access to secondary education became widespread during the 1960s and 1970s. However, schooling has hardly progressed further since the last decade, and the fall in the birth rate up until 1995 has resulted in a decline in pupil numbers. The number of pupils in primary education will increase until 2009 and will then fall: overall, numbers will increase by 116,000 between 2003 and 2013. In secondary education, the numbers will continue to follow the downward trend which began in 1994 until 2010. They will then increase with the arrival of the generations born after the 1995 increase in the birth rate. Over the period 2003-2013, the number of secondary school pupils will fall by 73,000.
