Health in the workplace amongst employees over 50
Anne-Françoise Molinié
Employees in their fifties often admit to more frequent health problems which only partially correspond to diagnoses by occupational health doctors. These problems, which can stem from working conditions, may also alter a person's career path. How debilitating they are depends largely on the nature of the problems and their severity, but also on the characteristics of work itself. When health problems make it difficult to work, occupational health doctors often have to intervene, but redeployment is limited by working conditions. With the limitations on early retirement and the increasingly stringent eligibility conditions for unemployment benefit, the possibility of leaving work earlier in life with an acceptable financial situation is becoming more unlikely.
