Disparities in household wealth between 1992 and 2004
Marie Cordier, Cédric Houdré, Catherine Rougerie
Income, social category, geographic location, age, as well as received inheritances or donations are the discriminating factors in the composition of gross household wealth. However, these factors only account for around half of the distribution of this wealth. Between 1992 and 2004, the majority of indicators showed that the disparities throughout the population remained stable. This situation, however, hides contrasted evolutions. The disparities remain stable amongst households which own their main residence and households over 60 years old. They have increased amongst households aged between 30 and 50 years old, as well as amongst lower income households. In comparison to the rest of the population, the gross wealth of younger people was lower in 2004 than 12 years earlier, whilst that of the over 50s had increased.
