In France at the end of 2016, 175,500 self-employed workers worked in cultural activities, including artistic creation and its dissemination, audiovisual and multimedia, architecture, amateur arts education and advertising. In these sectors, those in self-employment as their primary occupation account for almost a third of all jobs, 2.5 times more than in all sectors as a whole. Driven by the introduction of the auto-entrepreneur status, the number of self-employed individuals working in these sectors exclusively or in addition to wage job almost doubled between 2007 and 2016. The introduction of this status has generated a great deal of interest, attracting a new breed of workers: younger, more female and holding down multiple jobs. The measure has had a profound impact on employment conditions in a number of cultural sectors.
