Despite working in two closely related professions, self-employed and non-employing taxi drivers and drivers of hire cars with drivers (HCD) form two distinct sub-populations. At the end of 2016, the 7,000 HCD drivers were mostly micro-entrepreneurs (57%) with a recently established business. Conversely, 99% of the 24,000 taxi drivers were traditional self-employed workers, with a long-established business. In addition, the legal framework applicable to them defines different working conditions for each category. These differences are reflected in a significant gap in self-employment income, with taxi drivers generating average earnings of 1,230 euros per month, while HCD drivers earn just 570 euros per month from their self-employed work. Three out of ten HCD micro-entrepreneurs were also salaried, with their wage representing most of their income. Taking into account the salaries of those with more than one job, the overall average income of HCD drivers amounts to 940 euros per month, 26% less than the 1,270 euros earned by taxi drivers.
