The period covered depends on the geographical zoning :

  • the file giving the list of municipalities, municipal districts, delegated municipalities and associated municipalities as of January 1st of the year, with the code of the higher levels (canton or pseudo-canton, department, region) is available from 1999 to 2020;

  • the file giving the list of cantons and pseudo-cantons (fictitious canton with the outline of the entire municipality when it is shared by several cantons) as of January 1st of the year is available from 1999 to 2020;

  • the file giving the list of boroughs as ofJanuary 1st of the year is available from 1999 to 2020;

  • the file giving the list of departments as ofJanuary 1st of the year is available from 1999 to 2020;

  • the file giving the list of regions as ofJanuary 1st of the year is available from 1999 to 2020;

  • the file giving the list of countries and foreign territories as ofJanuary 1st of the year is available from 1999 to 2020;

  • the historical file, listing the events that have occurred in the communes, municipal districts, associated and delegated communes, covers events that have occurred since 1943 (creation, merger, deletion, change of name, etc.).

    To facilitate the use of the COG, INSEE provides a web service on the INSEE API portal, which allows access to the history of the COG: the Metadata API. This web service makes it possible to obtain a geographical area from its code and date, to identify the territories encompassed by a geographical area (or encompassing a geographical area), and the territories that preceded or succeeded it.

Changes to be made to the official geographic code are always subject to a regulatory text that describes the event that affects these objects. Checks (partly automatic and partly manual) are carried out after the information is entered into the information system to ensure that there are no errors at the time of entry and that alldata is consistent.
