France, Social Portrait 2021 edition

This work provides a perspective on more than a year of a health crisis with unprecedented economic and social impacts: How has the population's mortality and health changed throughout the waves of Covid-19? To what extent have the preventive measures been adopted? How has the healthcare system been affected? Which regions were most affected by the drop in births seen nine months after the first lockdown? What impact has the crisis had on household income and the job market? What effect did the crisis have on young people?

24% of households account for 68% of privately owned housing

One quarter of households in France own more than one property. These multi-property households hold two thirds of the private housing stock. As their standard of living increases, so too does the number of properties these households own. As such, 58% of those who own multiple properties are wealthy or well-off, compared to 34% of all households. They are also older and more often couples than the average for all households. In addition, their main residence is more often located in the commuting zones.

Half of these multi-property households have at least one property that they rent out, compared to 13% for all households. When these households own three or more properties, they are almost exclusively rented out. Households that own more properties are more likely to seek the services of property investment companies.

The ownership of property to rent is also extremely concentrated: only 3.5% of households have five or more properties, but they own 50% of privately owned rental properties. They alone own 37% of city-centre properties, compared to 24% for the country as a whole.
