Travelling by Car: People Living in the Suburbs Drive Twice as far as People Living in Central Areas

Clotilde Sarron, Corentin Trevien (SDES).

People living in central areas, which are primarily made up of urban municipalities, are responsible for 39% of the theoretical CO2 emissions attributable to cars, although they represent 51% of the population. Indeed, there are proportionally three times as many households without a car in central areas when compared with in the suburbs, which are predominantly peri-urban areas. Distances travelled by car in relation to the number of inhabitants are also 39% lower in central areas. Ability to access public transport, proximity to everyday facilities and the density of the cycling infrastructure, which are favourable to other modes of transport, account for more than a third of this difference. The distances travelled by car increase with urban sprawl. As a result, the further away one moves from city centres, the more the number of cars per household increases, as does the proportion of owner-occupied and single-family homes. Finally, at a municipal level, the distances travelled by car in relation to the number of inhabitants increase in line with the median standard of living, “all else being equal”.
