Data Scientists, Community Managers... and Computer Scientists: Identifying Digital Workers

Aurore Desjonquères, Claire de Maricourt, Christophe Michel (Dares)

In France in 2017, roughly 3% of people in employment worked in IT support services and information systems, programming, digital management and strategy, digital communication, digital expertise and consulting, telecommunications or data analysis. The proportion of digital workers has increased over the past decade, particularly in programming and development, which now account for 14% of all digital jobs. Digital jobs extend well beyond the IT and telecommunications sectors, with half of them being found in other service industries. These even account for 76% of data analysis jobs and for 69% of communication jobs. The vast majority of digital jobs are full-time permanent salaried positions, with two out of three being managerial positions. Eight out of ten digital workers are men, one out of two are aged under 38, while four out of ten have spent five years in higher education. Four in ten digital jobs are based in the Île-de-France region.
