Continous growth for patents, the region Pays de la Loire partially catching up on
its backlog
The Pays de la Loire region filed 480 patents in 2018, accounting for 3.8 % of national patents. The rising number of patents has been in continuous growth since the early 1990s, helping the region partially bridge its lag. The technological advantages of the region are consistent with its economy, characterized by the presence of subcontractors for major automotive or aerospace groups and worldwide recognized research laboratories. The mechanical sector has been predominant since 1986, and the weight of the chemical sector has nearly doubled over 30 years. Similarly to the national level, the transportation domain, classified under the mechanical sector, predominates in patent filings.
