Data collection

The survey took place approximately every 10 years in six waves from September to September among ordinary households and their members.

Data is collected on two visits, face-to-face with an interviewer using computer-aided data collection. A third session of questions by telephone is scheduled for respondents to the "Decision-making within the couple" module.

It is a "logbook" survey. First a questionnaire is used to ask the respondent about their practices over the long term and also about irregular or occasional activities. A daily logbook is then used in which the respondent must note down the details of their activities over a set day.

Each line in the logbook corresponds to an elementary time unit of 10 minutes. It therefore measures the time taken by each activity at the moment when it is done or shortly afterwards, and therefore does not rely on memory.

The persons surveyed describe their timetable in it over the course of the day in the terms of their choice, noting down the start and end times of the activities in succession.

To take account of seasonal variations in time use, data collection for this survey is carried out over a period of one year.
