The “Urban Audit Pilot Project”, the first attempt at collecting comparable statistics on 58 European cities, was carried out by the European Commission in 1999. The pilot project generated valuable results, but also showed that Eurostat and the national statistics institutes must play a leading role. Several data collection cycles followed, the most recent launched in 2017 when Eurostat signed grant agreements with 18 national statistics institutes with the aim of collecting statistics on cities.
The experience gained during previous data collection campaigns and methodological studies shows the need to further explore the use of new data sources and new methods to improve the quality of infra-national statistics.
This project aims to support these initiatives by collecting data at the level of “cities” [73 in France] and “functional urban areas” so as to be able to compare European cities. These cities are defined by a common methodology and their definition is included in the TERCET Regulation, which entered into force in 2018. The project also makes use of the DVF source (housing prices) on an experimental basis.

The planned activities are grouped in 2 work packages, linked to specific objectives, deadlines and results:

  • Work package 1: Data collection for cities and FUAs and dissemination;
  • Work package 2: House price modelling in France.
