Insee Focus2026 electoral body 48.7 million registered voters for the 2026 municipal elections

Manuella Baraton (Insee)

As of early February 2026, 50.4 million people were registered on the French electoral roll. Among them, 1.7 million lived abroad and were registered at a consulate, 374,000 were citizens of another European Union country living in France. Of these 50.4 million voters, 48.7 million are allowed to vote in the municipal elections on the 15th and 22nd of March.

In mainland France and in the French overseas departments, 95% of French people of voting age were registered to vote, this proportion had remained stable since 2022. The number of people registered to vote had increased by 847,000 since the 2024 European election. This increase was mainly due to demographic changes: automatic registrations of young people who had reached the age of 18 had outnumbered the number of deaths. Since May 2024, 4.1 million French people voluntarily registered or re‑registered on an electoral roll, most often as a result of moving house. In three out of five cases, they registered online.

Like two years ago, Portuguese citizens were the most numerous Europeans registered to vote in France.
