In France, life satisfaction is the same as it was 10 years ago
In 2023, people aged 16 and over in France gave an average satisfaction rating of 7.2 out of 10 to their current life. This level of satisfaction, close to the European average, had changed little since 2014. Life satisfaction, like the majority of well-being indicators, increased with the standard of living and decreased when the state of health deteriorates.
Younger people on average trusted strangers less, but were more satisfied with their personal relationships. On the other hand, older people were more likely to feel alone and less likely to feel happy. On average, people living in couples were more satisfied with their lives than those living alone. Finally, people living in the French overseas departments were less satisfied with their lives than those in metropolitan France.
