In Q4 2024, private payroll employment fell back by 0.2% Flash estimate of payroll employment - fourth quarter 2024
Between the end of September 2024 and the end of December 2024, private payroll employment declined by 0.2% (that is -50,100 jobs), after a virtual stability in the previous quarter (+0.1% that is +27,000 jobs). Private payroll employment was at the same level as a year earlier (that is -1,000 jobs). It far exceeded its pre-pandemic level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.6% (that is +1.1 million jobs).

In Q4 2024, private payroll employment decreased by 0.2%, back to its level of Q4 2023
Between the end of September 2024 and the end of December 2024, private payroll employment declined by 0.2% (that is -50,100 jobs), after a virtual stability in the previous quarter (+0.1% that is +27,000 jobs). Private payroll employment was at the same level as a year earlier (that is -1,000 jobs). It far exceeded its pre-pandemic level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.6% (that is +1.1 million jobs).
Temporary employment kept declining
In Q42024, temporary employment decreasedagain, andmore sharply than in the previous quarter: -1.9% after -0.9% (that is -14,000 jobs after -6,300 jobs). Temporary employment was below its Q4 2023 level by 5.6% (that is -42,800 jobs) and 7.8% below its pre-pandemic level (that is -60,400 jobs).
As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).
Excluding temporary work, private payroll employment was virtually stable in industry and kept decreasing in construction
Between the end of September 2024 and the end of December 2024, private payroll employment excluding temporary work in agriculture fell by 0.8% (that is -2,400 jobs) after +2.3% in the previous quarter (that is +7,200 jobs). It was below its previous year level by 1.8%.
Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was virtually stable (-0.1%, that is +3,200 jobs), after a stability in the previous quarter (0.0%, that is +100 jobs). It topped its Q4 2023 level by 0.2% (that is +7,500 jobs) and it exceeded its pre-pandemic level by +2.4% (that is +76,500 jobs).
In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased for eighth consecutive quarter: -0.5% (that is -7,800 jobs) after -0.2% in the previous quarter (that is -3,500 jobs). It was below its Q4 2023 level (-1.7% that is -27,500 jobs) and its peak at the end of 2022 (-40,200 jobs), but remained well above its pre-pandemic level (+4.8%, that is +70,300 jobs compared to the end of 2019).
Employment fell back in market services
In Q4 2024, in market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) fell back for the first time since Q3 2013 (excluding 2020): -0.2% after +0.1% in the previous quarter (that is +22,600 jobs after +16,300 jobs). It slightly topped its Q4 2023 level (+0.3% or +35,600 jobs) and exceeded sharply its pre-pandemic level (+7.5% compared to the end of 2019 or +870,100 jobs).
In non-market services,private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was stable (0.0%) after +0.5% (that is -100 jobs after +13,200 jobs). It was above its Q4 2023 level by 1.2% (or +32,100 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 5.8% (or +153,000 jobs).
