Insee PremièreNational economic wealth in 2023 A decline due to falling land prices

Adrien Bonomo, Jeanne Devineau (Insee), Aurélien Ravary (Banque de France)

At the end of 2023, France’s national economic wealth (or net worth) was 18,674 billion euros, down after eight years of growth (-4.2%, after +5.7% in 2022 and +4.8% on average between 2014 and 2022). This decline was explained by the decrease in property prices, while at the same time financial assets and liabilities rebounded.

Households hold three quarters of national wealth. Their net worth fell only slightly in 2023 (-0.9%). For households who are net holders of financial assets, the fall in property prices was partly offset by the rebound in their financial assets.
