Engineered goods: clear rebound
In September 2024, household consumption of engineered goods rebounded sharply (+1.8% after remaining stable in August 2024 – revised data). This increase is explained by the strong acceleration in spending on clothing and textiles (+6.2%) and, to a lesser extent, by the rebound in spending on durable goods (+1.2%). Spending on “other engineered goods” was virtually stable (+0.1%).
Over the third quarter of 2024 as a whole, household consumption of engineered goods was stable compared to the second quarter.
Textile-clothing: strong acceleration
In September 2024, spending on clothing and textiles accelerated sharply (+6.2% after +1.1% in August 2024 – revised data). This acceleration is mainly due to the strong increase in clothing spending: cooler temperatures and abundant rainfall in September led to higher spending in this category.
Durable goods: rebound
In September 2024, durable goods consumption rebounded (+1.2% after -0.6% in August 2024 – revised data). This increase is mainly due to the rebound in spending on housing equipment (+2.6% after -3.9% in August 2024 – revised data), especially computers and accessories, household appliances and furniture.
Other engineered goods: virtually stable
In September 2024, consumption of “other engineered goods” was virtually stable (+0.1% after +0.2% in August 2024 – revised data).

Energy: slight downturn
In September 2024, household spending on energy fell (-0.3% after +0.5% in August 2024 – revised data) as the acceleration in electricity and gas spending did not offset the decline in fuel consumption.
Over the third quarter of 2024 as a whole, energy consumption rose by 0.9%.

Revisions
The monthly change in household consumption of goods for August 2024 has been revised upwards by 0.2 percentage points to +0.4%, instead of +0.2%. Since the previous publication, new information has been incorporated and the coefficients for seasonal adjustment (SA) and working day adjustment (WDA) have been updated.
The monthly change in household consumption of goods for May 2024 has been revised down by 0.4 percentage points to +0.6% instead of +1.0%. This revision is due to a correction in gas consumption, revised downwards following the receipt of consolidated data for the months of May to September.

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).
Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP) (renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), GFK, Logista.
