Insee PremièreIn Wallis and Futuna, the population has fallen by a quarter in twenty years

Elsie MEHOBA (Service territorial de la statistique et des études économiques – STSEE)

In 2023, 11,151 people lived in Wallis and Futuna, including 8,088 in Wallis and 3,063 in Futuna. The population has fallen by 25.4% since 2003, when it peaked. The decline was sharp between 2003 and 2013 (-2.1% per year on average) but has slowed over the last decade (-0.9% per year on average). The massive emigration of young people, combined with a fall in the birth rate, explains this population decline. The native-born are still in the majority, but their proportion is decreasing. The population is ageing and becoming increasingly feminised. The average household size has fallen sharply.

The proportion of women and men with tertiary qualifications is increasing, but there are now more women than men with such qualifications. Internet access in households is becoming more widespread.
