In July 2024, the volume of sales decreased both in wholesale and retail
In July 2024*, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased again over a month (‑0.6% after ‑0.8% in June), in particular due to the decline in the raw agricultural products and live animals (-7.8% after +4.3%) and the household goods sectors (‑1.5% after ‑0.3%).
The volume of sales also decreased again in July 2024 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.4% after ‑0.6%). The volume of sales retreated again both in specialised stores (‑0.9% after ‑0.4%) and in trade not in stores (‑0.9% after ‑0.3%). On the contrary, sales in non‑specialised stores bounced back (+0.6% after ‑1.2%). Within specialised stores, sales were down in almost all sub-sectors, particularly in automotive fuels (-1.9% after -0.7%).
Lastly, the volume of sales bounced back slightly in July 2024 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.5% after ‑1.6%), driven by the rebound in motor vehicle equipments trade (+2.9% after ‑3.6%). Conversely, sales volumes contracted in motor vehicles maintenance and repair (‑2.7% after +0.8%) and in motorcycles trade and repair (‑1.0% after +1.7%). The volume of sales in the motor vehicles trade was, for its part, virtually stable (-0.1% after -1.2%).
Early retail trade estimate for August 2024
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased in August 2024 (+0.5% over a month). From June to August 2024, it would be stable compared with the same three months a year earlier.

From May to July 2024, the volume of sales decreased compared to the same three months a year before (‑1.1%)
The volume of sales of the three months under review (May to July 2024) in overall trade was 1.1% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased both in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑5.2%) and, to a lesser extent, in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.8%). Conversely, cumulative sales volumes increased slightly in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.3%). Within this sector, it grew both in non-specialised stores (+0.8%) and in trade not in stores (+1.2%), while it was virtually stable in specialised stores (‑0.1%).
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in July 2024 has been revised downwards by 0.2 points compared to the previous release, and now stands at ‑0.9% (after rounding).
