In August 2024, oil prices in euros retreated sharply (‑7.0% month-on-month after +2.7% in July). Conversely, gas prices rebounded strongly (+17.8% after ‑5.5%). Prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) decreased again over one month (‑1.0% after ‑3.9%), but remained up by 7.9% over one year. Food commodity prices bounced back a little over one month (+0.8% after ‑4.7%) and rose sharply over one year (+12.4%). Prices of industrial raw materials continued to fall over one month (‑3.5% after ‑2.9%), but increased slightly over one year (+2.2%). Lastly, all monitored prices of strategic materials for the industry dropped.

Oil prices retreated sharply, gas prices rebounded strongly
In August 2024, the price in dollars of North Sea crude oil (Brent) retreated sharply (‑5.6% after +3.5% in July), averaging $80.4 a barrel. In euros, the downturn was even more marked (‑7.0% after +2.7%), due to the appreciation of the euro against the dollar over the period.
Conversely, the price of natural gas on the European market (TTF) rebounded strongly (+17.8% after ‑5.5%), averaging €38.3/MWh. Over three months, it has risen by 20.0%. Lastly, the price of uranium fell again (‑5.7% after ‑2.2%), but remained up sharply over one year (+39.8%).

Prices in euros of industrial raw materials decreased again
In August 2024, the prices of industrial raw materials in euros declined further over one month (‑3.5% after ‑2.9% in July), but were up slightly over one year (+2.2%).
Prices for minerals fell again (‑4.3% after ‑2.8%), in the wake of those for ferrous metals (‑7.3% after ‑1.4%) and non-ferrous metals (‑3.8% after ‑4.7%). Prices for precious metals, on their side, were virtually stable (‑0.2% after +1.7%). Over a year, prices of mineral materials increased slightly (+2.0%), driven up by those for precious metals (+21.8%) and, to a lesser extent, non-ferrous metals (+3.7%). Only ferrous metal prices dropped over one year (‑9.9%).
Prices for agro-industrial raw materials rebounded over one month (+1.3% after ‑3.1%) in the wake of those for sawn softwood (+6.6% after ‑3.3%) and natural rubber (+4.6% after ‑6.4%). Conversely, prices for natural textile fibres continued to decline (‑2.7% after ‑3.3%), as did those for hides (‑1.5% after ‑0.8%). Tropical sawn wood prices edged down (‑1.0% after +0.4%). Finally, prices for paper pulp were virtually stable (‑0.2% after ‑3.9%). Over one year, prices for agro-industrial materials rose by 3.8%. They were driven up by prices for natural rubber (+32.1%) and paper pulp (+8.0%), while prices for natural textile fibres fell sharply (‑13.1%).

All prices of strategic materials for the industry are down
In August 2024, the price in euros of lithium dropped again (‑7.5% after ‑6.6% in July). This was also the case for the prices of copper (‑6.0% after ‑3.3%), cobalt (‑6.0% after ‑2.2%), silver (‑5.4% after ‑0.2%), platinum (‑4.9% after ‑1.4%), nickel (‑2.4% after ‑7.0%), chromium (‑1.6% after ‑0.9%) and molybdenum (‑1.5% after ‑0.8%). Finally, the price of palladium retreated (‑4.8% after +3.1%).

Food commodity prices in euros bounced back a little
In August 2024, the prices in euros of food commodities picked up (+0.8% after ‑4.7% in July), due to the rebound in those for tropical commodities (+3.8% after ‑4.4%), seafood products (+3.8% after ‑6.4%) and meat (+1.4% after ‑6.2%). In contrast, prices for oilseeds fell again (‑5.9% after ‑1.3%), as did those for sugar (‑6.0% after ‑0.2%) and cereals (‑3.3% after ‑8.2%). Over one year, food commodity prices surged by 12.4%, driven by soaring tropical commodity prices (+87.2%), themselves buoyed by those of cocoa (+159.3%) and coffee (+60.2%). Conversely, the prices of other imported food commodities declined year on year: this was particularly the case for sugar (‑24.6%), cereals (‑15.2%) or even oilseeds (‑8.0%).
