30 August 2024 · n° 212In Q2 2024, payroll employment was stable Payroll employment - second quarter 2024
In Q2 2024, payroll employment was at a standstill: it was stable (that is -12,900 net job creations) after a +0.3% in the previous quarter (that is +78,600 jobs). It exceeded its Q2 2023 level by 0.5% (that is +131,600 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of 2019) by 5.1%, that is 1.3 million additional jobs, with one out three jobs in work-study contract.
For this publication of payroll employment in Q2 2024, quarterly employment estimates have been fitted on 2022 annual employment estimates, which were published in July 2024. This led to slightly revise downwards private payroll employment level since 2022, and to slightly revise upwards public payroll employment in regard of the previous estimations. Thus, quarterly employment estimates have been more revised on the past than usually (see methodological note updated in this publication).
- In Q2 2024, private payroll employment was virtually stable and public payroll employment rose by 0.3%
- Temporary employment decreased again
- Excluding temporary work, payroll employment bent in market services
- Over a year, private payroll employment increased especially for people aged 55 years old and more, work-study or permanent contracts

Over a year, private payroll employment increased especially for people aged 55 years old and more, work-study or permanent contracts
In Q2 2024, private payroll employment kept rising sharply among people aged 55 years old and more: over a year, it rose by 3.3% (that is +121,100 jobs). It retreated for people aged less than 30 years old, bringing it back to his level from a year ago. It decreased slightly for people aged between 30 to 54 years old, down to -0.5% over a year (that is -60,100 jobs).
The Q2 2024 retreat in private payroll employment was due to a decrease in fixed-term jobs (excluding temporary) and temporary work: over a year, the number of fixed-term contracts dipped by 2.2% (that is -40,900 jobs) and the one for temporary work declined by 6.4% (that is -50,400 jobs). Conversely, permanent contracts rose (+0.6% that is +110,600 jobs), such as apprenticeship (+3.7% that is +37,700 jobs). Since the end of 2019, 0.9 million jobs have been created in permanent contracts and 0.4 million in apprenticeship.
Finally, in Q2 2024, private payroll employment was virtually stable for women (-0.1%) and slightly fell for men (-0.2%). Over a year, linked to the decreases in temporary work and in construction, jobs mostly occupied by men, private payroll employment increased stronger for women (+0.5%) than for men (+0.1%).

Compared to the flash estimate published on 6 August 2024, the payroll employment in the private sector alone in Q2 2024 has been revised downwards by 20,600 jobs, with its relative evolution revised downwards by 0.1 point.
