Private payrollemployment exceeded its Q2 2023 level by +0.4% (+78,000 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.1% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

In Q2 2024, private payroll employment was stable, after +0.3% in the previous quarter

Between the end of March 2023 and the end of June 2024, private payroll employment was stable (0.0% that is -7,900 jobs) after +0.3% in the previous quarter (that is +61,100 jobs). Private payrollemployment exceeded its Q2 2023 level by +0.4% (+78,000 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.1% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

Temporary employment decreased afresh

In Q2 2024, temporary employment decreased afresh, after a near stability in the previous quarter: -2.7% after -0.1% (that is -20,500 jobs after -700 jobs). Temporary employment was below its Q2 2023 level by 6.2% (that is -48,700 jobs) and 5.2% below its pre-sanitary crisis level (that is -40,700 jobs).

As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll kept rising in industry and decreasing in construction

In Q2 2024, private payroll employment excluding temporary work in agriculture decreased by 0.7% (that is -2,100 jobs) after -0.3% in the previous quarter. It was below its previous year level by 1.1%.

Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) kept rising in Q2 2024: +0.2% in as in the previous quarter (that is +6,400 jobs after +6,700 jobs in the previous quarter). It topped its Q2 2023 level by 1.0% (or +32,800 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q4 2021, it exceeded it by +3.1% (+95,900 net job creations since the end of 2019).

In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased for sixth consecutive quarter: -0.4% after -0.6% (that is -6,300 jobs after -9,000 jobs). It was below its Q2 2023 level (-1.5%; that is -24,100 jobs) but remained well above its pre-sanitary level (+6.0%, that is +88,200 jobs compared to the end of 2019).

Employment slowed down in market services

In Q2 2024, in market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slowed down, it was virtually stable after a rebound in Q1 2024: +0.1% after +0.4% (that is +6,300 jobs after +50,700 jobs). It topped its Q2 2023 level (+0.6% or +77,700 jobs) and exceeded sharply its pre-sanitary level (+7.8% compared to the end of 2019 or +908,200 jobs).

In non-market services,private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slowed down more moderately: +0.3% after +0.5% (that is +8,300 jobs after +14,100 jobs). It was above its Q2 2023 level by 1.6% (or +43,900 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 6.1% (or +160,200 jobs).
