Insee FocusMarriages in 2022 and 2023 In 2022 and 2023, a partial catch-up of marriages cancelled during the health crisis

Sylvain Papon (Insee)

In 2023, as in 2022, 242,000 marriages were celebrated in France. This was a relatively high number, given the downward trend during the recent decades. However, the shortfall in celebrations during the health crisis has not been fully offset. In 2022, 210,000 civil partnership (Pacs) were signed.

In 2022, same-sex unions accounted for 3% of marriages and 5% of Pacs.

Of those who married in 2022, 82% were marrying for the first time, 17% were remarrying following a divorce and 1% were widowed.

In a quarter of marriages between opposite-sex couples, the woman was older than the man. The average age at marriage continued to rise, reaching 37.3 years for women and 39.8 years for men in 2022. It was higher for same-sex couples.
