Insee PremièrePresidential election 2022: 16.5% of voters were registered in a municipality other than their main residence

Chantal Brutel (Insee)

In 2022, 7.7 million people, or 16.5% of French people aged 18 or over who had registered to vote in the presidential election, did so in a municipality other than their main residence. The Electoral Code provides for this in various situations.

This is the case for 39% of young people aged 18 to 25, who can remain registered in their parents' municipality. Three quarters of French adults living in a community (retirement home, barracks, etc.) were not registered in the municipality where they lived either. This situation was also common among voters who had moved recently : more than half of voters who changed municipality of residence in 2021 were registered in 2022 in a municipality other than their main residence, i.e. four times more frequently than other voters.

Half of all voters not registered in their municipality of main residence lived less than 21 kilometers from their electoral office. A particular feature in Paris : half of those not voting in Paris lived more than 181 kilometers from their electoral office, for example in the municipality of a secondary residence.
