In accordance with the European Business Statistics Regulation, the index of sales volume in overall trade and the associated turnover indices will be disseminated in reference and base 100 in 2021 from 29 March 2024, the date of publication of the January 2024 results.

All data are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

In November 2023, the volume of sales in trade dropped by 0.6% over a month, after decreasing by 0.3% in October and 0.8% in September.

In November 2023, the drop in the volume of sales was mainly due to wholesale trade

In November 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 1.5% over a month, after ‑0.6% in October and ‑1.6% in September. This fall, which concerned all wholesale sub-sectors, was mainly due to the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑3.6% after ‑1.2%), food, beverages and tobacco (‑1.7% after ‑0.6%) and “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (‑1.5% after ‑0.9%).

In November 2023, the volume of sales fell back in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.7% after +0.5%).

Lastly, the volume of sales increased in November 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.0% after ‑0.1%), both in specialised stores (+1.0% after +0.5%), in retail trade not in stores (+2.1% after +0.6%) and in non specialised stores (+0.6% after ‑1.2%). Within specialised stores, the growth was mainly led by the “other household equipment” (furniture, hardware, appliances, etc.: +1.9% after +3.0%) and the information and communication equipment (+5.9% after +1.0%).

Early retail trade estimate for December 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in December 2023 (‑0.9% over a month). Over the fourth quarter of 2023, it would be 0.7% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2022.

From September to November 2023, the volume of sales decreased by 1.8% compared to the same three months a year before

The volume of sales of the three months under review (September to November 2023) in overall trade was 1.8% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. While it decreased both in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑4.0%) and in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.7%), it increased strongly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+7.3%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales decreased both in specialised stores (‑2.4%) and non-specialised stores (‑1.4%), while it grew slightly in retail trade not in stores (+0.7%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in October 2023 has been revised downwards by 0.1 points (after rounding), to ‑0.3%.
