Monthly change: +0.1% in December; year-on-year change: +3.7%
In December 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) bounced back slightly over one month: +0.1%, after ‑0.2% in November. This increase is mainly due to the rebound in the prices of services (+0.6% after ‑0.3%), notably those of transport (+6.0% after ‑5.9%). The prices of food and of tobacco were stable over one month (after +0.4% and 0.0% in November respectively). Those of manufactured products decreased (‑0.3% after 0.0%), as did those of energy (‑1.2% after ‑1.1%), notably those of petroleum products (‑3.4% after ‑2.8%).
Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices rose by 0.3% over a month in December 2023, after ‑0.1% in November.
Year on year, consumer prices went up by 3.7% in December 2023, after +3.5% in November. This increase of inflation resulted from the year-on-year acceleration in the prices of energy (+5.7% after +3.1%) and of services (+3.1% after +2.8%), while those of manufactured products (+1.4% after +1.9%) and food (+7.2% after +7.7%) slowed down.
Slight decline of core inflation year on year
Year on year, core inflation decreased again, reaching +3.4% in December 2023, after +3.6% in November.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) bounced back slightly over one month (+0.1% after ‑0.2% in November); year on year, it increased by 4.1% in December 2023, after +3.9% in the previous month.

Acceleration in energy prices year on year
Year on year, the prices of energy rose by 5.7% in December 2023, after +3.1% in November. The prices of petroleum products rebounded slightly (+0.5% after ‑1.4%), mainly due to base effects (the month-on-month decrease is less sharp in December 2023 than in December 2022). Year on year, the prices decreased less than in the previous month for diesel (‑1.1% after ‑2.5%) and liquid fuel (‑8.8% after ‑15,1%), while they increased at a more moderate rate for petrol (+6.8% after +7.5%). The prices of gas also bounced back moderately (+0.9% after ‑3.7%), and those of electricity accelerated (+18.9% after +16.1%). Finally, the decrease in the prices of solid fuel softened slightly (‑12.4% after ‑12.9%).
Acceleration in service prices year on year
Year on year, service prices increased by 3.1% in December 2023, after +2.8% in November. The prices of transport bounced back (+2.1% after ‑1.4%), notably those of transport by road (+4.2% after ‑1.4%), while those of transport by train slowed down (+1.0% after +3.6%) and airfares were stable over a year (after +0.1%). The prices of rents, water and household refuse collection accelerated (+2.8% after +2.6%), as did those of health services (+0.6% after +0.4%), while the decrease in those of communication services softened (‑3.1% after ‑4.8%). Contrariwise, the prices of “other services” slowed down a little (+4.2% after +4.3%), notably those of accommodation services (+1.6% after +3.4%), catering (+4.7% after +4.8%), social protection (+4.3% after +4.5%) and maintenance and repair of the dwelling (+4.3% after +4.5%) and of private vehicles (+7.0% after +7.1%), while those of insurance services accelerated (+3.9% after +3.5%).

Year on year, manufactured product prices slowed down again
Year on year, the prices of manufactured products increased by 1.4% in December 2023, after +1.9% in November. The prices of “other manufactured products” slowed down (+2.0% after +2.5%), notably those of vehicles (+0.3% after +1.0%), non-durable household goods (+5.1% after +6.7%), glassware, tableware and household utensils (+5.2% after +5.7%) and furniture and furnishings (+2.3% after +2.7%), while the decline in those of major household appliances accentuated slightly (‑1.2% after ‑1.0%). Contrariwise, the decrease in the prices of games, toys and hobbies softened (‑2.5% after ‑2.8%). The prices of clothing and footwear slowed down (+1.1% after +1.8%). Those of health products decreased year on year slightly more than in the previous month (‑0.9% after ‑0.8%).
The year-on-year slowdown in food prices went on
Year on year, food prices rose by 7.2% in December 2023, after +7.7% in November. They thus slowed down for the ninth month in a row. Excluding fresh products, the year-on-year rise in food prices softened (+6.9% after +7.9%), notably for bread and cereals (+7.5% after +8.5%), meat (+4.6% after +5.5%), milk, cheese and eggs (+8.4% after +9.8%), oils and fats (+4.1% after +5.2%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+10.5% after +11.4%), alcoholic (+5.5% after +6.0%) and non-alcoholic beverages (+7.9% after +8.6%). Contrariwise, the prices of fresh products accelerated year on year (+8.8% after +6.6%), notably those of fresh fruits (+7.6% after +5.2%) and fresh vegetables (+13.5% after +8.4%), while those of fresh fish fell back slightly year on year (‑0.6% after +3.1%).
