Insee PremièreFirst estimates for 2023 Agricultural Accounts  Falling prices fort cereals

Claire Géry, Vincent Hecquet, Félix Lucas (Insee)

According to the first estimates for 2023 agricultural accounts, agricultural production should decline by 0.8%, against a backdrop of cereal and commodity price declines, following two years of strong increases.

Crop production should grow by 6.1% in volume. Cereal harvests are expected to rise by 5.8% in volume, with weather conditions less adverse than in the summer of 2022. Wine production is expected to grow by 3.3% in volume, following the sharp rise witnessed the previous year. Overall, crop production is expected to fall by 4.6% in value, due to a 10.1% drop in price. Animal production should rise by 5.2% in value, due to the increase in price compensating for the drop in volume.

Intermediate consumption in value should rise by 2.5%, mainly as a result of a further rise in the price of fertilisers. After two years of increase, the value added in the agricultural sector is expected to fall as production is down, whilst intermediate consumption is up. Overall, according to the first estimates for the 2023 agricultural accounts, the gross value added at factor cost per worker in real terms should fall by 9.0%, after rising by 13.1% in 2021 and 9.6% in 2022.
