In May 2023, building construction managers’ opinion about their past activity has degraded strongly. Their opinion regarding their expected activity has also deteriorated: the corresponding balance of opinion has been dropping since January 2023.
More business managers than in the previous month have considered the evolution of their company situation to be unpredictable: the balance of opinion on the economic uncertainty felt has rebounded.

The opinion on demand has degraded again
In May 2023, slightly less building contractors than in last month have considered the level of their order books to be higher than normal. The corresponding balance has continued to drop since November 2022, but remains above its long term average.
Given their staff size, building contractors have considered that their order books provide them with 8.4 months of work, a duration which has slightly decreased this month.
Supply difficulties have kept on dipping but those regarding workforce shortage persist
In May 2023, the production capacity utilisation rate is stable: it stands at 92.3%, above its long term average (89.0%).
Slightly less business managers than in the previous month have reported facing obstacles limiting their production (65%). The share of business managers who declared facing a workforce shortage is stable (46%), while the proportion of those declaring supply difficulties has kept on dipping since November 2022. Both shares stand well above their long term averages.
The proportion of companies that have reported to be at the limit of their production capacity (production bottlenecks), that is to say that they could not produce more with their current means if they were to receive more orders, has dropped slightly but remains well above its long term average. 27% of business managers considered themselves unable to increase their production in case of additional orders due to a lack of personnel and 7% due to supply difficulties.
The balance of opinion regarding expected prices has dropped significantly
In May 2023, significantly less business managers than in the previous month have announced that they will increase their prices in the upcoming three months. The drop of the corresponding balance of opinion, which started in January 2023, has amplified this month. However, it remains above its long term average.
