Cereal prices fell over a month and decelerated year on year
In January 2023, cereal prices continued to fall sharply over one month (‑4.3% after ‑5.8% in December). This drop reflected that of soft wheat prices (‑5.1% after ‑5.4%), due in particular to the abundant harvests expected in Australia and India, strong competition, especially from Russia, and the appreciation of the euro against the dollar. Maize prices also fell (‑2.7% after ‑7.9%) due to depressed demand as a result of avian flu. Year on year, cereal prices slowed down, but continued to be on a marked rise (+5.7% after +9.2%). Compared to January 2020, they have risen very sharply (+60.8%).
The fall of oil seed prices eased in January 2023 (‑2.8% over one month after ‑7.7%). They were driven down by soybean (‑6.5% after ‑4.6%), sunflower (‑2.6% after ‑7.5%) and rapeseed (‑2.6% after ‑7.9%) prices, in particular due to a planned reform of agrofuels in Germany. Year on year, oil seed prices dropped by 20.7% (after ‑14.9%). Since January 2020, however, they have risen sharply (+40.2%).

For further information
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. Their variations should therefore be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
Further informations (including IPPAP and IPPIAP methodologies) are available through the “Documentation" tab on the web page of this publication.
