Monthly change: +0.4% in January; year-on-year change: +6.0%
In January 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.4% over one month, after ‑0.1% in December. The prices of energy rebounded (+3.9% after ‑3,6%) due to the increase in petroleum product prices (+6.7% after ‑5.2%), partly due to the end of fuel rebates, and the rise, in part supervised, in gas prices (+7.9% after ‑1.4%). The prices of food accelerated (+1.7% after +0.5%) and those of services slowed down (+0.1% after +0.3%). The prices of manufactured goods fell back (‑1.1% after +0.2%) due to the winter sales.
Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices increased by 0.8% over a month, after +0.1% in December.
Year on year, consumer prices grew by 6.0% in January 2023, after +5.9% in December. This slight increase in inflation resulted from an acceleration in food prices (+13.3% after +12.1%) and energy prices (+16.3% after +15.1%). The prices of manufactured goods (+4.5% after +4.6%) and those of services (+2.6% after +2.9%) slowed down.
Increase in core inflation year on year
Year on year, core inflation grew by 5.6% in January 2023, after +5.3% in December.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 0.4% over one month, after ‑0.1% in the previous month; year on year, it increased by 7.0%, after +6.7% in December.

Acceleration in energy prices year on year
Year on year, the prices of energy accelerated in January (+16.3% after +15.1%). The increase in petroleum product prices accentuated (+16.3% after +14.3%) due to the acceleration in diesel prices (+17.5% after +15.6%) and petrol prices (+9.3% after +3.0%). The prices of gas also rose (+38.2% after +29.3%) with a simultaneous increase in regulated tariffs and market offers. Contrariwise, the prices of electricity (+3.1% after +7.3%), liquid fuels (+28.7% after +37.8%) and solid fuels (+45.5% after +52.1%) slowed down.
Acceleration in food prices year on year
Year on year, food prices rose by 13.3% in January, after +12.1% in December. The increase in fresh product prices was more marked than in the previous month (+10.2% after +9.3%): the prices of fresh fruits (+7.4% after +6.1%) and fresh fish (+14.7% after +12.6%) accelerated. Contrariwise, those of fresh vegetables slowed down slightly (+12.0% after +12.4%). Excluding fresh products, the food prices accelerated (+13.9% after +12.6%), notably those of bread and cereals (+13.4% after +12.1%), milk, cheese and eggs (+19.1% after +16.9%), meat (+15.0% after +14.0%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+11.5% after +9.5%), non-alcoholic (+11.6% after +10.6%) and alcoholic beverages (+6.9% after +5.8%).

Slight slowdown in manufactured good prices year on year
Year on year, manufactured good prices increased by 4.5% in January, after +4.6% in December. The prices of clothing and footwear slowed down (+2.4% after +2.6%) due to a monthly decrease in prices, linked to the winter sales, slightly more marked than in January 2022. Those of “other manufactured goods” increased at the same rate than in the previous month (+6.2%). The prices accelerated for glassware, tableware and household utensils (+8.5% after +7.3%), non-durable household goods (+17.6% after +15.5%), equipment for sport (+3.8% after +3.1%), other appliances, articles and products for personal care (+8.2% after +7.1%) and books (+2.9% after +2.4%). Contrariwise, the prices slowed down for furniture and furnishings (+9.2% after +9.5%), small electric household appliances (+11.3% after +12.4%), games, toys and hobbies (+0.2% after +1.0%) and vehicles (+7.0% after +7.4%). Finally, health product prices kept decreasing over a year (‑0.6% in January, as in December).
Slowdown in service prices year on year
Year on year, service prices rose by 2.6% in January, after +2.9% in December. The increase in “other service” prices softened (+3.5% after +3.7%), notably those of accommodation services (+2.4% after +5.6%), package holidays (+19.3% after +30.7%) and social protection services (+3.7% after +6.3%). Contrariwise, the prices of maintenance and repair of the dwelling (+6.3% after +5.8%) and of personal transport equipment (+8.7% after +7.7%) accelerated, as did those of catering services (+5.3% after +4.9%) and transport services (+10.2% after +8.6%), notably airfares (+25.7% after +21.9%) and the transport by road (+10.1% after +4.7%). The prices of communication services kept decreasing over a year (‑1.4%). The prices of housing-related services rose at the same rate than in the previous month (+2.0%) and those of health services fell back (‑0.4% after +0.1%).
