Business outlooks, both general and personal, are judged less favourable than in October

The opinion of building craftsmen about their expected activity for the next three months, for both their company and the whole sector, has degraded between October 2022 and January 2023. The corresponding balances have diminished, both dropping below their long-term average.

Craftsmen’s opinion regarding the change in their activity for the last three month has also deteriorated: the corresponding balance has dropped, going below its average.

Building craftsmen’s opinion regarding the change in their workforce size remains unchanged

In January 2023, craftsmen’s balance of opinion about their workforce size over the past three month is almost stable, remaining at its long-term average. The one regarding their expected change in workforce size for the next three months has dropped slightly to its average.

Recruitment difficulties are easing somewhat

In January 2023, 60% of craftsmen have reported experiencing recruiting difficulties, a diminishing proportion that remains above its long-term average. The share of building craftsmen declaring that they are training apprentices has dropped again slightly: it stands at 40%, a level close to its long term average.

Revisions

The main balances of opinion for October 2022 are revised due to the integration of late responses from companies. In particular, the balance of opinion on expected activity, initially estimated at -12, is noticeably revised upwards, at -4.
