Temporary employment rose after two quarters of decrease

In Q3 2022, temporary employment increased: +1.9% (+14,900 jobs), after -2.3% in the previous quarter (-18,700 jobs) and -1,9% in Q1 (-15,900 jobs). Temporary employment remained significantly higher than its end 2019 level (+3.6%) and its Q3 2021 level (+2.9% that is +22,900 jobs).

As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (industry, construction, market or non market services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll continued to increase in market services

Excluding temporary work, private payroll increased significantly in market services in Q3 2022: +0.7% (+85,300 jobs), after +0.8% in Q2 2022 (+95,000 jobs). It topped its Q3 2021 level by 3.0% (that is +359,800 jobs). This growth explained most of the total increase in payroll employment, over a quarter as over a year.

In this sector, the increase over a quarter was driven primarily by employment in scientific and technical activities (excluding temporary work) (+22,300 jobs), followed by wholesale and retail trade (+14,700 jobs), accommodation and food service activities (+10,400 jobs) and information and communication (+10,100 jobs).

Moreover, industrial employment (excluding temporary work) increased again sharply in the third quarter of 2022: +0.5% (+16,400 jobs) and +1.2% over a year. It exceeded its pre-sanitary crisis level by 0.5%. In the construction sector, payroll employment slightly increased in Q3 2022 (+0.2% that is 3,200 jobs) and exceeded its Q3 2021 level by 1.0%.

Nevertheless, in the third quarter of 2022, payroll employment in non-market services slightly decreased: -0.2% (or -13,300 jobs) after +0.1% in Q2 (+8,500 jobs), which led to nearly reach the same level as in Q3 2021. Finally, payroll employment in the agriculture lessen by 1.0% in Q3 2022 (or -3,200 jobs), which led to a decrease of 1.3% over a year.
