Insee PremièreThe Covid-19 crisis doubled the use of Internet calling applications within companies

Nicolas Boudrot (Insee)

In 2021, almost two-thirds of employees in companies with 10 or more employees used the Internet for business purposes. Of these, six out of ten accessed the Internet on mobile devices (smartphone, laptop, tablet) via the mobile telephone network.

Almost all companies in France had fixed Internet access, but only eight out of ten had very high-speed Internet access, which was lower than the EU average.

Nearly six out of ten companies used Internet-based calling applications, twice as many as in 2019. This growth was stimulated by the health crisis, which led nine out of ten companies to expand or intensify this use, almost half of them on a permanent basis.

Companies tripled the use of social media between 2013 and 2021. More than six in ten companies in 2021 had a user profile on one of the most popular social media platforms.

In 2021, seven out of ten companies had a website. Of these, two out of ten upgraded their website as a result of the health crisis, specifically the description of goods or services, the price information or online ordering or booking.
