In June 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises bounced back (+4.0% after a fall of –4.5% in May seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional business births rebounded more sharply (+8.2% after –6.8%) than micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+1.3% after –3.0%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months (July 2021 to June 2022) decreased (–2.9%) compared to the same period one year earlier (July 2020 to June 2021).

Rebound in business births in trade

In June 2022, business births bounced back in most main sectors of activity compared to the previous month. In particular, they rebounded sharply in trade as a whole, including trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+7.3% after –8.4%), as well as in industry (+13.4%) and transportation and storage (+8.9%).

Decrease in business births over the second quarter of 2022

The raw number of business births decreased over the second quarter of 2022, in comparison with the same quarter of 2021 (–5.1%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations fell sharply (–5.3%) and conventional sole proprietorships’ births shrank strongly (–15.3%). Company births remained virtually stable (+0.1%).

Over the second quarter, transportation and storage activities made the strongest negative contribution to the overall decrease (–17,200 business births compared to the same quarter of 2021, representing a contribution of –6.4 points)*. Within this sector, the fall was due to that in “other postal and courier activities” (–17,800 business births over the second quarter in comparison with the same quarter one year ago); this sub-sector includes home delivery services.

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Fall in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months dropped (–2.9% year on year), at a faster pace than in the previous month (–1,0%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations declined more moderately (–4.2%) than conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–12.3%). Conversely, company births increased sharply (+5.0%).

The variation in the overall number of business births in May 2022 has been revised downwards by 0.2 points, to –4.5% instead of –4.3%, due to the revision of the raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.

The business births data are build from the Register of Enterprises and Establishments (REE). This register is itself supplied with data from Sirene and enriched with elements from the Sirus statistical register.

The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by Eurostat, to harmonize and compare European data.

The appearance of a market producer legal unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources.

The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
