Warning

In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In April 2022, turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (–0.7% after +2.8% in March); however it kept growing in industry as a whole (+1.3% after +3.9% in March).

Export turnover declined sharply in April (–1.8% after +3.1% in March).

In April 2022, turnover fell back sharply in “other manufacturing” and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products

In April, turnover fell back sharply in “other manufacturing” (–1.9% after +3.0% in March), particularly in the chemical industry (–7.8%). It declined sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (–2.0% after +12.8%) and slowed down in the manufacture of transport equipment (+0.3% after +4.4% in March). It bounced back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.0% after –1.4% in March) and kept growing in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.8% after +1.1%). Finally, turnover went up again very strongly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+7.2% after +7.0% in March), particularly in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, due to significant gas price rises.

Turnover in the manufacturing industry went up sharply over a year (+15.2%), due to significant price rises

Mainly as a result of the soaring producer prices, the turnover of the last three months went up sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year, in the manufacturing industry (+15.2%), and even more in industry as a whole (+25.0%). The increase was observed in all major sectors. The growth over a year was particularly pronounced in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+64.2%), in “other manufacturing” (+16.0%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+77.6%). The increase was also pronounced in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+10.7%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+10.8%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.7%).

The fastest growing subsectors were electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (+81.7%) and the manufacture of other transport equipment (29.1%); only in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers was a decrease recorded (–7.1%).

Revisions

The percentage change of the turnover index in March 2022 in the manufacturing industry is left unchanged (+2.8%) compared to the previous publication; it is left unchanged too in industry as a whole (+3.9%).

On the other hand, the pourcentage changes of the turnover index in the previous two months were significantly revised, due to the adjustment of a SA-WDA model in energy and late corrections in a context of data strongly affected by price effects.
