Energy: clear decrease
Energy consumption decreased significantly in May (-2.6% after +1.9%). This is explained by the marked decrease in gas and electricity consumption (-4.8% after +4.0%), probably linked to particularly high temperatures in May. Fuel consumption rebounded slightly after a decrease in April (+0.4% in May after -0.8%).

graphiqueBreakdown of energy
Engineered goods: clear rebound
Consumption of engineered goods picked up sharply in May (+2.7% after -1.3%) due to the very strong rebound of consumption in clothing and textiles (+15.1% after -3.7%). Consumption of durable goods was stable (+0.0% after -1.0%). Consumption of "other engineered goods" decreased slightly more than in April (-0.5% after -0.2%).
Durables: stable
In May, consumption of durable goods was stable after a decrease in April (+0.0% after -1.0%): consumption of transport equipment rebounded sharply (+1.1% after -1.2%), mainly due to the recovery of purchases of new cars and campers. Consumption of housing equipment decreased again (-0.3% after -0.7%), due to the drop in purchases of electronics and household appliances, despite an increase in purchases of furniture. Consumption of other durable goods decreased again with a decline in jewelry purchases.
Textile-clothing: very strong rebound
Consumption of clothing and textiles rebounded strongly in May (+15.1% after -3.7%), driven by an increase in purchases of ready-to-wear clothing. This increase could be explained by a catching up of previous months as well as by anticipated summer purchases, due to a particularly warm May compared to previous years.
Other engineered goods: slight decrease
Consumption of "other engineered goods" fell slightly more than in April (-0.5% after -0.2%), with a drop in purchases of perfumes and DIY equipment.

Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
