In February 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises declined sharply (–4.7% after +2.6% in January seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations fell back strongly (–7.3% after +4.1%) while conventional business births decreased slightly (–0.4% after +0.1%). The raw number of business births increased strongly over the last twelve months (+13.7% year on year), though at a slightly slower pace than in the previous month (+16.0%). This increase relates to a period covering the first lockdown in 2020, during which business creation had collapsed.

In February 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises declined sharply (–4.7% after +2.6% in January seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations fell back strongly (–7.3% after +4.1%) while conventional business births decreased slightly (–0.4% after +0.1%). Sharp fall in business births in business support activities

In February 2022, the number of business births fell back sharply in business support activities (–9.0% compared to the previous month) and in education, human health and social work activities (–8.5%), after sharp increases in January in these sectors.

Stability in business births over the last three months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (December 2021 to February 2022) is unchanged in comparison with the same months one year ago. Company births increased sharply (+7.6%). Conversely, micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations dropped slightly (–0.5%) and conventional sole proprietorships’ births fell sharply (–12.7%).

Over this period, business support activities made the strongest positive contribution to the overall change (+11,300 business births compared to the last three months of the previous year, representing a contribution of +4.2 points)*. Within this sector, the strongest growth was in public relations and communication activities (+4,500 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago). On the other hand, wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles activities is the sector that weighed the most negatively on the overall change, with a number of creations down by 11,700 over the same period.

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Sharp increase in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+13.7% year on year). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+12.5%), and even more company births (+23.9%), due to the very low level of business births during the lockdown in 2020. The rise was much more moderate for sole proprietorships’ births (+0.5%).

Six business births out of ten are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In February 2022, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs in business births over the last twelve months decreased slightly and stood at 60.8%, its level in December 2021.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in January 2022 has been lowered by 0.5 points, to +2.6% instead of +3.1%, due to the revision of the raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.

The appearance of a market producer legal unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources.

The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
