In January 2022, the industrial producer prices accelerated sharply over a month (+3.7% after +1.3% in December 2021) and over a year (+20.1% after +17.2%). These are the highest increases recorded in the available series since January 1995. Prices of products sold on the home market sped up sharply (+4.6% after +1.3%), driven up by those of energy. Those sold on the foreign markets accelerated at a more moderate pace (+1.5% after +1.1%).

Producer prices in the French industry: +3.7%
In January 2022, the industrial producer prices accelerated sharply over a month (+3.7% after +1.3% in December 2021) and over a year (+20.1% after +17.2%). These are the highest increases recorded in the available series since January 1995. Prices of products sold on the home market sped up sharply (+4.6% after +1.3%), driven up by those of energy. Those sold on the foreign markets accelerated at a more moderate pace (+1.5% after +1.1%).
HOME MARKET: +4.6%
In January 2022, the industrial producer prices for the home market rose strongly over a month (+4.6% after +1.3%). They continued to be driven up by the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water (+9.8% after +4.3%), while those of manufactured products accelerated strongly (+2.4% after +0.1%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices for the home market sped up in January 2022: +22.2% (after +18.0% in December 2021).
Strong rise of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In January 2022, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water accelerated strongly over a month (+9.8% after +4.3%). The electricity production and trade prices (+16.1% over a month after +6.8%) were driven up by the unprecedented rise of prices on the wholesale market. Partly contained by the freezing of regulated tariffs, those of trade services of gas through mains were up by 8.9% over a month (after +2.9%). Year on year, the rise of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water carried on the strong acceleration that started at the beginning of 2021: +53.2% in January 2022 (after +42.9% in December 2021 and +39.6% in November 2021).
Strong increase of the “other industrial products” prices
The prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated strongly in January 2022 over a month (+2.1% after after +0.4%), due to increases in raw material and energy costs. Prices rose for all divisions, notably basic metals (+8.1% after +0.5%), chemicals and chemical products (+2.0% after +0.5%) and other non-metallic mineral products (+3.3% after +0.5%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” remained on a strong upward trend: +13.2% in January 2022 (after +11.7% in December 2021).
Rebound of refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products bounced back sharply over a month in January 2022 (+16.2% after –5.6%). Over a year, they accelerated (+75.4% after +65.5% in the previous month).

In January 2022, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery sped up over a month (+1.2% after +0.6%), driven up mainly by those of electrical equipment (+2.6% after +0.4%). Year on year, they accelerated (+5.4% after +4.3%).
Rise of transport equipment prices
In January 2022, the prices of transport equipment decelerated slightly over a month (+0.5% after +0.6%). Over a year, they went up by 4.5% (after +4.3%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: +1.5%
In January 2022, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets accelerated over a month (+1.5% after +1.1%), due to the strong rise of manufactured product prices (+2.2% after +0.5%), while those of electricity fell back slightly. Over a year, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets rose by 14.9% (after +14.8%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated strongly over a month (+3.0% after +1.0%). Those of basic metals returned to a sharp upward trend (+7.5% after –0.1%) and those of chemicals and chemical products kept rising strongly (+3.5% after +2.8%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated (+16.1% after +14.8% in the previous month).
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products bounced back sharply over a month (+12.0% after –6.0%) and remained on a strong upward trend over a year (+63.6% after +67.3%).
Transport equipment prices rose by 0.7% over a month (after +0.6%) and by 2.9% over a year (after +2.8%).
At last, the prices of food and beverages accelerated over a month (+2.0% after +0.7%) and over a year (+8.4% after +6.2%), as did those of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery (+0.9% after +0.4% over a month; +4.3% after +3.3% over a year).

Import prices of industrial products: +4.3%
In January 2022, the import prices of industrial products reached unprecedented rises, according to the series available since January 2005: +4.3% over a month (after +1.8%) and +26.9% over a year (after +23.7%). Prices accelerated strongly, especially those of unrefined hydrocarbons (natural gas and crude oil) and those of manufactured products (+2.2% after +0.1% in the previous month).
The prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated sharply over a month (+1.7% after +0.6%), especially those of chemicals and chemical products (+3.0% after +1.0%) and of basic metals (+4.2% after +1.1%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” were up by 15.8% (as in the previous month).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products bounced back over a month (+14.4% after –4.5%) and accelerated over a year (+71.5% after +62.5%).
The prices of transport equipment also bounced back over a month (+1.6% after –0.5%), notably those of motor vehicles (+1.6% after –0.2%). Over a year, they accelerated sharply (+3.2% after +1.2%).

The producer price indices in industry measure the change of producer prices of goods and services, linked to a given industrial activity and sold on the home market or on the foreign markets.
The import price indices of industrial products measure the change of transaction prices of goods and services purchased by economic agents established on French territory to non-resident agents.
Calculation method
They are calculated on the basis of the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise), which is operated by INSEE.
