In January 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises increased again (+3.1% after +3.4% in December seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations went up sharply again (+4.6% after +5.8%) while conventional business births recovered slightly (+0.6% after –0.1%). The raw number of business births increased strongly over the last twelve months (+16.0% year on year).

Sharp rise in business births in business support activities

In January 2022, the number of business births increased sharply in business support activities (+8.8% compared to the previous month) and in education, human health and social work activities (+13.6%).

Slight increase in business births over the last three months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (November 2021 to January 2022) increased slightly in comparison with the same months one year ago (+0.3%). This small rise is due to company births, which increased sharply (+9.1%). On the other hand, micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations dropped slightly (–0.2%) and conventional sole proprietorships’ births fell sharply (–13.9%).

Business support activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+9,900 business births, representing a contribution of +3.8 points)*. Within it, the strongest growth was in business and other management consultancy activities (+3,900 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago).

Sharp increase in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+16.0% year on year). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+16.0%), and even more companies’ births (+24.0%). The rise was much more moderate for sole proprietorships’ births (+1.9%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Six business births out of ten are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In January 2022, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs in business births increased slightly and represents 61.0% over the last twelve months.

Redesign of business birth calculation

Business birth statistics are now calculated according to a revised scheme. This new calculation method extends the scope of enterprises taken into account, with the aim of better covering the field of business statistics. The result is an increase of 5% in the level of business births in 2021 and a greater share of conventional sole proprietorships in business births. However, the main trends do not change significantly.
