In August 2021, the industrial producer prices slowed down over a month (+0.9% after +1.4% in the previous month), both on the home market (+1.0% after +1.5%) and the foreign markets (+0.6% after +1.0%). Year on year, they accelerated (+9.5% after +8.4% in July).

In August 2021, the industrial producer prices for the home market decelerated over a month (+1.0% after +1.5%), as did those of manufactured products (+0.4% after +0.9%). Over a year, they accelerated nevertheless: +10.0% (after +9.0% in the previous month).
Sharp rise in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In August 2021, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water kept rising strongly over a month (+3.0% after +3.3%). The prices of trade services of gas through mains continued to rise strongly (+12.9% after +12.5%), in connection with a further increase in regulated tariffs and a demand far exceeding available stocks. Conversely, the prices of electricity production and trade decelerated (+1.6% after +2.9%), especially on the wholesale market. Year on year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water stroke a record high growth rate in August 2021: +18.7% (after +16.2%).
Rise in prices of the “other industrial products”
The prices of the “other industrial products” decelerated in August 2021 over a month (+0.7% after +1.1%). Those of chemicals and chemical products remained on an upward trend (+2.0% after +1.8%), in the wake of the commodity prices over the recent months. In line with the strong increases in steel and metal prices, those of basic metals continued to rise but at a more moderate pace (+2.3% after +3.7%), as did those of “fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment” (+0.5% after +1.3%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” rose strongly in August 2021: +8.0% (after +7.2% in the previous month).
The refined petroleum product prices increased very slightly over a month
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum were not very dynamic in August 2021 over a month (+0.2% after +4.3%). Nevertheless, over a year, they went up by 61.3% (after +56.0%).

Virtual stability of the prices of transport equipment and food and beverages
In August 2021, the prices of transport equipment stabilized over a month (+0.1% after +0.5%). Over a year, they rose by 3.1% (after +3.2% in July).
Similarly, the food and beverage prices were almost stable over a month (+0.1% after +0.2%) and rose by 3.0% over a year (after +2.7%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: +0.6%
In August 2021, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets decelerated over a month (+0.6% after +1.0%), as did those of manufactured products (+0.6% after +0.9%). Over a year, they rose nevertheless by 8.4% (after +7.1%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” went up by 1.1% over a month (after +0.9%): those of basic metals continued to rise sharply (+3.5% after +3.9%), especially those of basic iron and steel and ferro-alloys (+4.8% after +6.0%), while those of chemicals and chemical products recovered (+1.1% after –0.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” continued to rise sharply in August 2021 (+10.1% after +8.9%).
The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery accelerated slightly over a month (+0.4% after +0.2%), driven up by those of electrical equipment (+0.8% after –0.5%). Over a year, they sped up also (+2.1% after +1.3%).
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products fell back very slightly over a month (–0.3% after +7.3%) but remained on a very strong upward trend over a year (+71.9% after +71.2%).
At last, the prices of food and beverages and those of transport equipment were virtually stable over a month (respectively +0.1% after +1.3% and +0.1% after +0.7%).

Import prices of industrial products: +0.9%
In August 2021, the import prices of industrial products decelerated over a month (+0.9% after +2.1%), as did those of manufactured products (+0.4% after +1.0%), while those of natural gas, liquefied or in gaseous state kept rising strongly. Over a year, the import prices of industrial products remained very dynamic: +13.4% (after +12.3%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” decelerated over a month (+0.8% after +1.6%), especially those of basic metals (+1.6% after +4.4%). On the contrary, the prices of chemicals and chemical products sped up (+1.3% after +1.0%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” went up by 12.0% in August 2021 (after +11.2%).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products fell back over a month (–2.3% after +4.6%) but remained on a strong upward trend over a year (+56.4% after +54.4%).
The prices of transport equipment and those of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery rose slightly over a month (+0.2% after respectively +0.1% and +0.3%). They accelerated over a year (respectively +2.3% and +1.9% after +1.7%).
At last, the prices of food, beverages and tobacco remained virtually stable over a month (–0.1% after +0.1%), and rose sharply over a year (+4.4% after +4.3%).

The producer price indices in industry measure the change of producer prices of goods and services, linked to a given industrial activity and sold on the home market or on the foreign markets.
The import price indices of industrial products measure the change of transaction prices of goods and services purchased by economic agents established on French territory to non-resident agents.
Calculation method
They are calculated on the basis of the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise), which is operated by INSEE.
