Insee FocusA 64% fall in hotel occupancy in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter in 2019

Bernard Canonéro, Jean-Claude Gidrol (Insee)

Total occupancy in terms of number of nights stayed in hotels in Metropolitan France fell by 64% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter in 2019.

Following a relative recovery this summer, hotels suffered on account of international travel restrictions and, above all, due to the second lockdown. Occupancy fell, particularly in top-end hotels.

Île-de-France was again more affected than the rest of Metropolitan France, with foreign and business tourism being particularly important in that region. In December, occupancy also fell considerably in hotels up in the mountains.
