In February 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises rebounded (+3.8% after –1.0% in January seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased (+5.1% after –0.4%) as well as, to a lesser extent, conventionnal business start-ups (+1.3 after –2.0%).

Rise in business births in transportation , accommodation and food service activities and household services

In February 2021, the number of business births increased in transportation and storage activities (+13.5%, mainly for post and mail activities), in accommodation and food service activities (+9.5%, especially for food restaurant activities) and in household services (+8.5%).

Increase in business births from December to February, over a year

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (December to February) increased sharply in comparison with the same months one year ago (+15.4%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations went up sharply (+19.4%), as well as companies’s births (+15.5%), while conventionnal sole proprietorships’ births fell back (–7.1%).

Transportation and storage activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+14,400 business births, which comes to a contribution of +6.6 points)*. Within it, the strongest increase was in other postal and mail activities (+15,400 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago). This upsurge is mainly due to the development in home delivery.

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up (+5.5%). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased sharply (+11.8%) while sole proprietorships’ births declined sharply (–15.0%) and companies’ births fell back slightly (–0.3%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In February 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs’ in the businesses births over the last twelve months increased slightly to 65.4%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in January 2021 has been increased by 0.3 points to –1.0% instead of –1.3%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
