The businesses births in the first half of 2018, which do not fall under the micro-entrepreneur regime, were mainly founded by employees in the private sector (35%) and by unemployed persons (20%). In business creation, women are still the minority (29%).

A third of creators had already set up a business prior to 2018. Independence is the main motivation for these entrepreneurs. Creating a business is often a solitary endeavour with two in three entrepreneurs beginning their projects on their own.

One in two new conventional businesses is launched with funding of less than €8,000. The preferred sectors are still trade, specialized, scientific and technical activities, and construction. Their customers are mainly local and composed of private individuals. One in ten companies uses at least one digital platform to connect with their customers.

27% of businesses created in the first half of the year had at least one employee by the end of 2018. A few months after being set up, in November 2018, the entrepreneurs were confident of their future; one and a half years on, this outlook has no doubt been shaken up by the COVID-19 health crisis.
