In October 2020, household consumption expenditure on goods rebounded sharply (+3.7% in volume* after –4.4% in September). It is thus 2.7% higher than its October 2019 level. This increase was driven by a sharp rise in food consumption (+7.1%) and energy expenditure (+6.4%). Manufactured good purchases were almost stable (–0.1%).

Food products: sharp rebound
In October, food consumption rebounded strongly (+7.1% after –4.7%). Expenditure increased for all products, especially meat and processed products. A sharp rise in tobacco consumption also contributed to this increase.

Energy: clear rebound
In October, energy consumption rebounded sharply (+6.4% after –0.1%). Gas and electricity expenditure rose sharply (+10.4% after –0.3% in September) due to relatively cold temperatures in October. At the same time, refined products consumption increased (+1.6% after +0.1%) partly due to the fuel oil consumption.

In October, manufactured good consumption stagnated (–0.1% after –5.7% in September). The increase in durable goods purchases (+0.7%) and other manufactured goods (+0.9%) was offset by a decline in spending on clothing and textiles (–3.9%).
Durables: on the rise
In October, durable goods spending recovered (+0.7% after –3.8%) due to the increase in transportation equipment purchases (+0.6%) and housing equipment purchases (+0.6%). In particular, car purchases were on the rise again after two months of sharp decline. Housing equipment purchases increased anew (+0.6% after –5.0% in September), due to a sharp rebound in household appliances purchases.
Textile-clothing: further decline
In October, textile-clothing spending fell for the second consecutive month (–3.9% after –14.4% in September). Sales of clothing and shoes fell sharply.
Other engineered goods: on the rise
In October, the consumption of "other manufactured goods" increased (+0.9% after –2.6%), due to a rebound in perfumes sales and a very strong rise in games and toys sales.

The evolution of September was revised upwards
The evolution of household consumption expenditure on goods for September 2020 was revised upwards to –4.4% instead of –5.1%. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the seasonal adjustment coefficients have been updated, excluding March to October from the estimation period.

Scope and definition - Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2010, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)
Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
