New Caledonia's population growth declines sharply between 2014 and 2019
In 2019, 271,400 inhabitants lived in New Caledonia. Since 2014, the population has increased by 2,600 people. Population growth is significantly lower than before: +0.2% per year between 2014 and 2019, compared to +1.8% between 2009 and 2014. This decline is mainly due to an increase in departures, combined with a decrease in arrivals. For the first time since 1983, the migration balance is negative. The population is only increasing in the southern province. The municipalities on the outskirts of Noumea continue to grow, while the capital is losing 5,600 inhabitants. The aging of the archipelago's population is accelerating. Inhabitants are more highly educated than in 2014, but differences between communities persist. Housing comfort is improving.
