High Operating Costs in Road Freight Transport
In 2017, the 31,800 enterprises specialising in road freight transport in France made €47.6 billion in turnover, i.e. 22% of total transport sector turnover. Small and medium-sized enterprises have a significant weight in this sector. Short-distance freight activity grew more than long-distance activity. Operating costs were high due to high intermediate consumption (subcontracting, fuel purchases, vehicle rentals, temporary employment) and the number of jobs. However, economic profitability was higher than in the transport sector as a whole.
