graphiqueTotal consumption of goods
Manufactured goods: clear increase
In August, manufactured good consumption rose sharply (+3.6% after –2.6% in July), mainly due to a rebound in textile-clothing spending (+17.4% after –1.7%) and manufactured good purchases (+4.2% after –3.4%). In contrast, spending on durable goods decreased (–1.5%).
Durables: further decline
In August, durable good spending fell (–1.5%) for the second consecutive month, due to the sharp decline in the consumption of transport equipment (–7.3% after +2.1%). After two particularly dynamic months, new cars and recreational vehicles (motor homes, caravans) purchases fell in August. On the other hand, housing equipment purchases (household appliances, electronics) rebounded sharply (+6.2% after –10.1%).
Textile-clothing: very strong rise
Textile-clothing spending recovered very strongly in August (+17.4% after –1.7% in July). This strong rebound was mainly due to the postponement of the summer sales dates, set this year from July 15 to August 11.
Other engineered goods: rebound
In August, the consumption of "other manufactured goods" rebounded (+4.2% after –3.4%) driven by the sharp increase in perfume sales.
