2020- n° 168In April 2020, further fall of the turnover in the manufacturing industry (−22.9%) Turnover in industry and construction - April 2020
In April 2020, the turnover collapsed again in the manufacturing industry (−22.9% after −17.1%) as in industry as a whole (−21.1% after −14.0%).
Compared to February (last month before the start of containment), the turnover fell in the manufacturing industry (−36.1%) as in industry as a whole (−32.2%).
Export turnover decreased also (−31.3% after −15.5%).
With the containment of the population from 17 March to 10 may 2020, companies’ value added tax (VAT) declarations, used for the turnover indices, have been slightly adapted by the Directorate-General for Public Accounting ; therefore, the indices of services production published here could be revised a little bit more than usual.
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).
SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period of indices).
In April 2020, the turnover declined in all sectors
The turnover in “other manufacturing” declined (−18.2% after −15.7%) in all subsections, although it resisted somewhat better in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (−11.6%) and in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−12.2%). In the manufacture of transport equipment, the turnover slumped (−53.7% after −33.7%), especially in automotive industry (−67.8% after −39.6%). It fell also in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−22.1% after −16.8%) with a more markedly drop in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−26.4%). The turnover decreased less sharply in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−9.3% after −4.0%) but it slumped also in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−43.9% after −24.3%).
Compared to February, the turnover decreased considerably in the manufacture of “other manufacturing” (−61.3%) and even more in automotive industry (−80.6%). It fell also sharply in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−43.8%), in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (−42.2%), in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (−44.9%) and in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−48.4%). The contraction was significant but lower in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−23.9%), in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (−17.7%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages(−12.9%) and in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−13.8%). The drop was limited in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (−1.6%).
