In April 2020, the prices of oil in euros plummeted (−41,2 % after −43,7 %). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) decreased again, but more slightly (−1,8 % after −3,9 %) when it comes to the prices of industrial raw materials (−1,9 % after −4,4 %) as those of or raw food materials (−1,7 % after −3,4 %).

Oil prices plummeted again heavily
In April 2020, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros dropped hardly (41,2 % after −43,7 %) to an average of €17 per barrel, its lowest level since June 1999. In dollars, the drop was the same magnitude (−42,2 % after −42,7 %).

Industrial commodity prices kept decreasing
In April 2020, the prices of industrial raw materials decreased again (−1,9 % after −4,4 %) driven by mineral materials prices (−2,8 % after −4,7 %), of which those of non ferrous metals (−4,0 % after −8,0 %). The prices of precious metals recovered (+6,1 % after −7,7 %) and those of ferrous metals fell back (−3,3 % after +0,2 %). However, the prices of agricultural raw materials recovered (+2,2 % after −2,7 %) as those of tropical wood (+2,1 % after −5,8 %) and sawn softwood (+20,2 % after −1,4 %). The prices of natural textile fibres decreased less than in March (−3,4 % after −10,4 %) as well as natural rubber (−8,2 % after −10,1 %). The price of pulp increased the same magnitude than in February (+1,9 % after +1,8 %) and the price of hide plummeted again (−18,9 % after −9,5 %).

Food commodity prices decreased again
In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials decreased less slightly than in March (−1,7 % after −3,4 %) like those of tropical foodstuffs (−1,3 % after −2,8 %) and sugar (−13,3 % after −22,8 %). The prices of oil seeds and vegetable oils decreased again (−2,5 % after −2,4 %) and those of meats (−11,9 % after +0,3 %). However, the prices of cereals accelerated (+8,6 % after +2,9 %) and the prices of seafood products recovered (+6,3 % after −6,0 %).

Crude oil: from 1986, the price of Brent gradually established as a representative reference price of European supplies.
Petroleum products: prices of petroleum are quotations from the Rotterdam market which supplies European market.
Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
