The producer prices in industry declined by 0.5% in February 2020 Industrial Producer and Import Price Indices - February 2020

In February 2020, the producer prices in French industry fall by 0.5% (after –0.1% in January 2020). The decline was observed on both prices for the French market (–0.6% after –0.1%) and for foreign markets (–0.5% after a stability). Year on year, they fell back (–0.4% after +0.2%).

Producer prices in French industry: –0.5%

In February 2020, the producer prices in French industry fall by 0.5% (after –0.1% in January 2020). The decline was observed on both prices for the French market (–0.6% after –0.1%) and for foreign markets (–0.5% after a stability). Year on year, they fell back (–0.4% after +0.2%).

FRENCH MARKET: –0.6%

The French producer prices in industry for the French market declined by 0.6% in February 2020 (after –0.1%), driven down by manufactured product prices (–0.5% after –0.2%) and, to a lesser extent, by those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water. Year on year, the French producer prices in industry for the French market fell back sharply in February 2020 (–0.9% after +0.2%).

Refined petroleum product prices hit a low since November 2017

In the wake of oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products declined by 8.7% in February 2020 (after –1.5%), reaching their lowest level since November 2017. Year on year, they fell back sharply (–9.4% after +7.7%).

The prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water fell back significantly

In February 2020, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water declined by 0.9% (after +0.4%), due to the fall in prices of electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (–1.1% after +0.1%). The prices of trade services of gas through mains kept declining (–7.6% after –3.4%), following the decreases in regulated tariffs and in the spot market. Year on year, the decline in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water strengthened in February 2020 (–2.1% after –1.2%).

The prices of electrical, electronic, computer and machinery equipments rose slightly, as those of transport equipment

In February 2020, the prices of electrical, electronic, computer and machinery equipments kept rising over one month (+0.3% after +0.2%) and over one year (+1.0% after +0.6%). Transport equipment prices grew also over one month (+0.2% after +0.1%) and remained dynamic over one year (+2.0% after +1.9%).

The prices of “other industrial products” and those of food and beverage were virtually stable

The prices of “other industrial products” remained almost unchanged since November 2019 (–0.1% in February 2020, as in the two previous months). Chemical product prices fell by 0.9% (after –0.8%), following the Brent downward trend. On the contrary, the prices of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, grew anew (+0.4% after a stability). Year on year, the prices of “other industrial products” kept decreasing (–1.1% after –0.9%).

Food and beverage prices stabilized also over one month (after –0.3%) and grew by 1.0% over one year (as in January 2020).

Producer price indices of manufactured products sold on the French market

FOREIGN MARKETS: –0.5%

In February 2020, the producer prices of French industrial products for foreign markets declined by 0.5%, after a stability in January 2020. They were mainly driven down by the sharp fall of export electricity prices, as demand was reduced by the exceptionally mild temperatures in Europe.

Export manufactured product prices remained virtually stable (–0.1% after a stability in January 2020). The export prices of refined petroleum products fell sharply (–10.4% after –2.1%), in the wake of oil prices, whereas other product categories prices grew slightly or were virtually stable.

However, the producer prices of French industrial products for foreign markets kept rising year on year in February 2020 (+0.5% as in the previous month).

Import price indices of industrial products: –1.1%

In February 2020, the import prices of industrial products kept declining (–1.1% after –0.5%), driven down by the import prices of hydrocarbons and, to a lesser extent, by those of manufactured products (–0.2% after –0.1%).

The import prices for coke and refined petroleum products kept falling over one month (–5.2% after –4.9%) and fell back sharply over one year (–7.8% after +4.6%).

Year on year, the import prices of industrial products fell back sharply in February 2020 (–1.6% after +0.2%).
